Baseball Superstar got his start in Paterson
Born to Prussian immigrants in 1874, Johannas Peter Wagner was raised in Carnegie, PA., near Pittsburgh. On April 23, 1896 Olympic Park in Paterson was open with Mayor Christian Braum throwing out the first pitch.
Honus Wagner and his team the Paterson Atlantics lost their first game against Wilmington 7-2, but the loss was not a sign of things to come. By September the race for the pennant was a battle brtween three cities: Paterson, Newark, and Hartford.
